The Alliance Wellness Center is a multicultural drug and alcohol rehab facility in Bloomington, MN. It was started in 2016 by Yussuf Shafie MSW, LGSW, a University of MN graduate and licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor (LADC) with the Board of Behavioral Health.

At Alliance Wellness, counselors treat the underlying emotions and unresolved issues that feed into the addictive habits of each individual. Whether the issue is past trauma or present-day stress, counselors work with each client to identify these problems and structure the treatment in a way best suited to the individual. Once a client understands the root causes of his or her addiction, it becomes easier to conquer the problem.

Alliance also offers education on mental health. Co-occurring mental health issues often spur drug addiction and alcoholism. When a recovering addict learns to recognize their vice triggers, it’s easier to avoid them and not be caught off guard in a situation.

The treatment services at Alliance include group and individual therapy, community events, relapse prevention, yoga, and spiritual development. To enter the Alliance treatment program, people must first fill out the Rule 25 screening form on their website.

2. Hazelden Betty Ford – Treatment facility in Center City, Minnesota

  • Phone: (877) 793-5205
  • Treatment programs: Inpatient/Outpatient Treatment, Telehealth, Detox, Sober Living
  • Payment options: check, credit/debit card, insurance

Hazelden Betty Ford offers holistic treatment for alcoholism and drug addiction. The center is named honoring former First Lady Betty Ford (1918–2011), a one-time alcoholic. They stress a holistic approach to drug and alcohol treatment that looks at the whole individual, not just the problem. This allows clinic counselors to get to the heart of each client’s issues and develop the most effective treatment plan.

Addiction takes hold in numerous ways. Some people get hooked on opioid painkillers and resort to alcohol for its numbing effects. As the body increases its threshold, the problem can spiral out of hand. A person may be in denial about the problem until others intervene. Such was the case with Betty Ford, who over-drank and abused opioid analgesics until her family staged an intervention.

After her recovery, she founded the Betty Ford Center in 1982. It currently has locations in eight states, including five in Minnesota. In 2015, the Betty Ford Center merged with the AA non-profit Hazelden Foundation, founded in 1949.

At Hazelden Betty Ford, they offer detox, inpatient treatment, outpatient treatment, and sober living. They also have specialized treatment programs for opioid addicts, teenagers, women, and older adults. Their recovery model is 12-step based, complete with AA meetings and relapse prevention.

3. Dakota Treatment Center – Rehab clinic in Burnsville, Minnesota

  • Address: 11939 West River Hills Dr, Burnsville, MN 55337
  • Phone: 952-890-4480
  • Treatment programs: Medically Assisted Treatment, Counseling
  • Payment options: Check, Credit/Debit Card, Insurance

In Burnsville, Minnesota, the Dakota Treatment Center is part of New Season, a national chain of opioid addiction centers that operate more than 70 clinics in 22 states. At the Dakota, they help local residents conquer addictions to Schedule I opioid drugs and opioid-based prescription medications.

For the new patient, it’s important to recognize the symptoms of opioid dependency. On first use, drugs like heroin have a calming effect on the body. After repeated use of the substance, the body develops a tolerance to the drug. To get the same effect as before, the person starts taking higher doses. As the cravings increase and the person can’t get by without the drug, addiction takes hold.

The signs of addiction are ominous. An addicted person will typically have trouble functioning at work or coping with daily responsibilities without the drug. However, the drug will impair that person’s ability to perform at an optimal level. The addicted person may also be prone to mood swings, withdrawal and erratic behavior. Some addicts contemplate and even cross the line into criminal behavior.

Whereas some people become opioid dependents through illicit sources, others get addicted to opioid-based prescription drugs, such as painkillers. A person who suffers chronic pain might overuse a medication to the point where higher doses are needed for its soothing effects due to heightened body tolerance. As with illegal opioids, a vicious cycle of dependency takes hold.

Dakota counselors help each patient understand the root causes of his or her addiction. They offer addiction counseling and medically assisted treatment for individuals struggling with opioid dependency. Patients here get group and individual counseling; Dakota also offers family therapy. Clinicians may administer Methadone or Buprenorphine to help patients through the early stages of rehab.

4. Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge – Faith-based treatment program in Minneapolis, Minnesota

In Minneapolis, MNTC offers six rehab treatment facilities: three for men and three for women. Clients meet individually with counselors and in groups with other patients at each facility. The clean, safe environment gives recovering addicts time to adjust to life without drugs or alcohol as they master new life skills and positive ways of thinking.

In Rochester, MN, the MNTC has separate facilities for men and women. At each, counselors help patients tackle the stresses that lead to substance abuse. For men, it might stem from anxiety over finances or pressures regarding job performance. For women, it’s often down to past traumas and emotional esteem issues. Regardless, MNTC works with each client to determine his or her triggers and customize the best treatment plan.

MNTC is especially focused on the impact drugs have on the lives of teenagers. Young people who complete the program come away with healthier worldviews and stronger coping skills for the world outside. For boys aged 13-18, MNTC offers faith-based treatment at their Lakeside Academy in Buffalo, MN.

MNTC stresses a faith-based approach to recovery. As part of the weekly activities, clients attend chapel, bible studies and join in singing choirs.

When a person becomes dependent on drugs or alcohol, the effects can be devastating for anyone close to the individual. At Retreat, each client is put on a structured regimen of positive daily activities. For long-term recovery, clients stay at one of the six sober living homes in the Crocus Hill neighborhood of St. Paul. Here, clients escape from the pressures and vices of the big city and retreat to nature’s beauty and uplifting vibes.

Retreat has one of the few local recovery programs geared toward adults over 55 years old. In this age group, many people lack anyone to turn to in times of stress and trouble. Seniors with drug or alcohol vices often take shame in their habits and try to hide the problem from loved ones. Hiding the problem usually makes matters worse. At Retreat, counselors remove the shame attached to addiction and help people of all ages conquer the demons that prevent them from living happier, healthier lives.

For people who can’t take time off from work or daily commitments, Retreat offers a nighttime recovery program. Here, clients attend rehab meetings several nights per week for a period of 18 weeks. Retreat also offers virtual rehab with online meetings for clients who are further along in their recovery.

For those re-entering the real world, Beauterre provides transition services to help former addicts land on their feet and ultimately thrive with sober lifestyles.
