Description

Does someone in your family or social circle have a drug or alcohol problem? If so, then the San Francisco Bay Area, the best place to call for help is the Ohlhoff House.

Throughout California, drug addiction has been a plague on communities. In 2020, there were 713 reported overdose fatalities in San Francisco alone.

Thankfully, the Ohlhoff House is there to help anyone searching for recovery programs in the Bay Area.

Ohlhoff House Recovery Program Types

Ohlhoff offers three basic programs, each designed for different needs. Each program offers counseling, education, activities and group support. The topics covered include stress management, family relations, relapse prevention, 12-step principles and safe practices.

  • Inpatient Treatment – The inpatient program consists of a 30-day stay at the Ohlhoff House. During this time, patients live, eat and sleep at the mansion property, where they get 24/7 care from the Ohlhoff staff. The 30-day program is the ideal option for patients who have undergone detox.
  • Residential Treatment – Ohlhoff offers separate residential treatment programs for men and women. The men’s program specializes in issues that drive male drug and alcohol addiction. Likewise, the women’s program focuses on issues that drive female chemical dependency.
  • Intensive Day Treatment – The Ohlhoff House also offers a residential alternative called the Skip Byron Primary Program. It’s a 30-day program that covers all the same ground as residential treatment, but where the patient stays at home each night. This is an ideal option for people with safe, sober home environments.
  • Intensive Outpatient Treatment – Ohlhoff offers several outpatient programs that patients attend three times per week. Each meeting lasts between 90 minutes and three hours. Adult outpatient programs last 26 weeks. They also have a women’s morning group.

Ohlhoff recovery programs are designed to help patients conquer their drug dependency and the psychological issues that cause compulsive behavior. Each program consists of structured daily activities and therapy sessions.

Ohlhoff Recovery Program Components

Ohlhoff offers a one-month residential inpatient program at its San Francisco, CA, mansion. The program consists of therapy, daily activities, group meetings, exercise and education. Residential patients stay at the Ohlhoff House 24/7 for the four-week duration.

  • 24 Hours Sobriety – Before starting one of the Ohlhoff recovery programs, clients must abstain from drugs or alcohol for at least 24 hours in advance of their arrival.

For recovery to succeed, each patient must first commit to sobriety. Once admitted to the program, each patient is helped on his/her journey by Ohlhoff counselors.

Accommodations

At the Henry Ohlhoff House, residents unwind and recover from all the stresses of everyday life. It’s a place to reflect and reconnect with things that matter.

  • Features – The mansion is equipped with cozy furnishings. Residents are served healthy, home-cooked meals during their stay.
  • Environment – The mansion property is surrounded by beautiful outdoors where people can exercise, socialize and engage in group activities.

Activities: Counselor Facilitated Peer Groups

The  Henry Ohlhoff House offers a nurturing community environment with group activities and individualized treatment options.

  • Individualized Counseling – Each resident at Ohlhoff meets one-on-one with an assigned counselor. The patient discusses his/her issues and vice triggers and the counselor uses this info to customize that person’s treatment plan.
  • Daily Educational Groups – Recovering residents learn best in groups, where people share their struggles and insights with like-minded individuals.
  • Family Group Therapy – Each week, Ohlhoff conducts group therapy sessions with family members of residents. The counseling staff promotes understanding between patients and loved ones.
  • Relapse Prevention and Education – To ensure the long-term recovery of each outgoing resident, Ohlhoff counselors teach life skills and coping mechanisms to help patients avoid future relapses.
  • Skill Building – People are generally happier when they have purposes in life. Drug and alcohol addiction often drains people of their sense of purpose. Ohlhoff helps patients repair this with skill-building activities.
  • Sober Living – The Ohlhoff House functions as an oasis free of vices, temptations, pushers and access points to drugs or alcohol. By the time patients leave, renewed and recovered, they’ve conquered the demons that would lead them down such paths.

During their time at Ohlhoff, patients internalize their sober identity. The inpatient program helps people gain the strength and social skills necessary to handle the world outside.

Health and Wellness

Ohlhoff combines substance abuse treatment with a regimen of meditation, exercise and healthy meals. Addiction is the opposite of good health. When patients embrace healthy habits, they’re likely to achieve long-term sobriety.

  • Yoga and Meditation – Ohlhoff recovery programs include yoga, which allows patients to stretch and unwind. They also conduct meditation exercises, where patients concentrate on peaceful, positive thoughts.
  • Exercise – The Ohlhoff recovery house has a gym that patients can use to improve their physical health and resilience. Working out makes the body feel better and gives people a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
  • Nutritious Meals – Ohlhoff promotes health and nutrition. Each day, patients are fed prepared meals cooked by the staff with healthy ingredients.
  • Beautiful Campus – The Ohlhoff House is situated near San Francisco’s most beautiful parks and recreational facilities. Patients can enjoy their time in the program with access to the beautiful outdoors.

Things like meditation, good dieting and exercise help reverse the effects of drug and alcohol addiction (negative thinking, dietary neglect, poor health).

Counseling Components

Ohlhoff recovery programs use the 12-step model for substance abuse treatment. Each patient undergoes a combination of physical and psychological exercises on the road to sobriety.

  • Trauma Counseling – In most cases of drug and alcohol addiction, the individual suffers from past trauma. Each patient meets with a counseling program director who helps him/her identify and overcome these issues.
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) – Patients recovering from opioid addiction may receive MAT on an as-needed basis.
  • Psychiatric Support – Patients meet regularly with counselors to discuss concerns, fears, goals, sticking points and progress on their road to recovery.
  • Aftercare – Ohlhoff counselors offer continuing care to patients as they exit the program and re-enter society. This may include additional meetings with assigned therapists and sobriety counseling.

Ohlhoff maintains a high ratio of staff to the patient population. They ensure that each patient gets the care and attention he/she needs throughout the program.

Additional Therapy Forms

Ohlhoff recovery programs consist of counselor facilitated peer groups that employ the most popular therapeutic models. During individual sessions and education groups with other residents, patients may engage in the following types of therapy in the sober environment of Ohlhoff.

  • Dialectical Behavioral TherapyAn evidence-based therapy that works on three levels: emotional regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness. Combined, this helps patients handle difficult situations, control their feelings and improve their interactions.
  • Narrative Therapy – Counselors use this therapy to help each patient discover the narrative of his/her life. This helps patients get in touch with their values and recognize special skill sets. Narrative therapy facilitates self-understanding and helps people become their best selves.
  • Somatic TherapyAn alternative practice that combines physical and psychological therapy. It finds the link between mental associations and body sensations. Somatic therapy is used to treat trauma and PTSD.
  • Art Therapy – Creativity stimulates the brain and gives people a sense of accomplishment. The creative process is the opposite of addiction because it encourages people to be proactive and constructive. It engages the mind in positive ways. Art therapy may include drawing, painting and other forms of visual art.
  • Drama Therapy – Acting is an effective tool for personal growth and mental health. Through characters, people can focus on alternate realities and release internal demons. It gives people a chance to get out of their skin and experience the world through other points of view.

Ohlhoff recovery programs are designed specifically for the individual. Some therapy occurs in group settings under an executive director and others are private. Both are essential tools for successful long-term treatment.
